A bit History ;)

The Kate project started in December 2000 at sourceforge.net. In the first month Kate was known as "KCEdit" (C = Cullmann). After some other people joined the project (like Micheal Bartl and Anders Lund), we changed the name to something more neutral and not as similar to KEdit -> Kant. Some time went on and Kant get more and more popular and some new devs joined the project (like Joseph Wenniger).
The next big step in evolution was that Kant was allowed to be placed in kdebase as a replacement/addon for the old KWrite app.
The only big problem now was that Kant sounds for some people too similar like "c*nt" and "can't", that was the reason for the final rename to Kate (KDE advanced text editor).
